We know when you’re planning a wedding, corporate event, or private party, you’re focused on creating an amazing and memorable experience. However, one aspect that’s often overlooked is the safety of the electrical equipment used by your entertainers. From microphones to speakers and amplifiers, the kit on stage is vital to the performance, but it needs to be safe and reliable.

This is where Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) comes in. Even if you’re unfamiliar with it, PAT testing plays a crucial role in confirming that the equipment is functioning safely, reducing the risk of electrical issues or incidents.

In this blog, we’ll break down what PAT testing is and how it helps to prevent technical hiccups during your wedding or event.

What Is PAT Testing and Why Do Events Need It?

Portable Appliance Testing involves checking the safety of portable electrical items - like amplifiers, mixers, PA systems, and other gear used at events.

PAT testing includes:

  • A visual inspection of cables and equipment for any obvious damage

  • Testing the device with specialised tools to check things like earth continuity, insulation resistance, and polarity

Why Is It Important?

PAT testing isn’t just a formality - it safeguards your event and minimises the chance of disruption when things matter most.

With nearly 25% of electrical faults involving portable equipment, this process plays a key role in preventing issues that could cause harm or lead to technical failure while in use.

Although PAT testing isn’t legally mandated, many wedding venues, corporate event spaces, and function halls now insist that all audio and lighting setups used by performers be PAT-compliant. Venues may ask for proof of this before allowing your suppliers on site.

How Does PAT Testing Benefit You?

  • Safety of your guests and venue: Properly tested equipment reduces the risk of electrical hazards throughout the event

  • A seamless entertainment experience: Routine inspections lower the likelihood of sound or power failure during key moments - like the first dance or a major speech

  • Venue compliance: Many venues require up-to-date PAT certification to host live performances

These checks provide solid reassurance when booking entertainment, helping to avoid any last-minute issues with venues or tech on the day.

How Often Should Equipment Be Tested?

The general recommendation is to have equipment tested at least once a year. If it’s used frequently or travels between multiple venues, more regular checks may be needed to ensure it’s still in good working order.

What About Public Liability Insurance?

Many venues also require entertainers and suppliers to carry public liability insurance - another important layer of protection. PLI covers injury to guests or damage to property caused by performance-related activities. Together with PAT certification, it ensures everyone involved is protected and covered, and the venue’s requirements are fully met.
